Let us probe the silent places, let us seek what luck betide us;
Let us journey to a lonely land I know.
There's a whisper on the night-wind, there's a star agleam to guide us,
And the Wild is calling, calling . . . let us go.

Dechen La to Tischu River

Up early to start our 12 mile hike to Mile 222. We get a relatively early start (about 9:40) and hike all day, taking plenty of rest breaks. Less sign of bear, wolf and caribou now that we are on the barrens (an area more heavily hunted and visited). We break for lunch next to Boulder Creek and are eventually joined by our Quad-Roving Friends from Edmonton. They got stopped a few km from the Twitcha River and turned around. Bill wins the pool. Sandy got minor blisters on her heels – must be from the extra distance on hard-packed surface (moleskin fixes the problem). Get to the Tishu River (just short of Mile 222) around 6:00, so we cross it (a double crossing which we accomplish with the same number of shoe changes) and then have dinner and our garbage fire before heading up to find a tent site. We find a good camp site while Steve goes to check in with an old acquaintance (Keith) who is the Wildlife Officer staying at Mile 222. We get the tents set up and next thing we know, Steve is flying down the road on a quad that Keith lent him for the night. He tells us there is a chance we can either 1) Get a helo lift to the border tomorrow, or 2) Get a ride from Keith. Keith shows up about midnight to tell us we can't do the helicopter (he's a new pilot who is uncomfortable with the ways of "Northern Hospitality"), but he tells us we can borrow the truck as long as we have it back before 11:00. Then he stays for another poetry reading by Steve. BIG pile of old wolf scat by John and Bill's tents – must have been a gathering sites for wolves in the fall, watching hunting parties butcher their game below during the fall hunts.
