Let us probe the silent places, let us seek what luck betide us;
Let us journey to a lonely land I know.
There's a whisper on the night-wind, there's a star agleam to guide us,
And the Wild is calling, calling . . . let us go.

First Day on the Canol Trail

On the trail at 10:40. Hike to the first crossing of the Ekwi River (at the beaver dam). Set up camp on what turns out to be an island. John and Sandy spot a small caribou downstream and across the river from the camp. Big storm overnight (heavy rain, snow, hail). That's when we discover our tent sites are on an island. By morning, what had been a bone-dry creek bed was now full of water. Our food cache was actually sitting in the water. River Beauty is at its peak — hard to walk around the campsite without crushing it.
